For Gabourey Sidibe, it’s not Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin co-hosting the Oscars. It’s Navin R. Johnson and Jack Donaghy.

Being new to the movie business, Sidibe, 26, a Best Actress nominee for Precious, knows most actors through their movie and TV characters – and is especially excited to see Martin, having been a big fan of the 1979 vehicle that launched his movie career, The Jerk.

“My mom has a crush on Steve Martin, and we used to watch The Jerk pretty much every day. And so I’m really excited that this show will be hosted by Jack Donaghy [Baldwin’s 30 Rock character] and the Jerk,” Sidibe said Monday at the annual luncheon for Oscar nominees, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in L.A.

That excitement is tinged with apprehension, though, as March 7 approaches – a big night for all the nominees, but especially for Sidibe, who’s being honored for her very first movie role.

Sidibe has settled on her date – that’ll be her mom – but is procrastinating on the dress. “I’m a little scared,” she admitted. “I haven’t even started looking at color or anything like that. I’ve got a bunch of sketches through e-mails, and I said that I looked through them, but I lied.”

But she wouldn’t trade it for anything. And now, she’s looking forward to broadening the scope of her acting.

“It sounds so sad to say it’s given purpose to my life, like I had no purpose before,” she said. “I did, but I have a different purpose now I want to do every kind of film. I want to do comedies. I want to do dramas. Romantic films. Period pieces. I want to do everything.”

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 7, and televised live on ABC beginning at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET
